The Little Elephant with the Big Earache

Image by Elaine Garvin © Hippocratic Press

The Little Elephant with the Big Earache tells the story of Eddie, who awakens with a terrible earache after a busy afternoon making mud pies with his cousins. His mother takes care of him during the night and Dr. Hippo reassures them both during the day. Will Eddie recover in time for his birthday?

In this story for children ages 2-7, Dr. Cowan empathizes with her small patients. A board certified pediatrician and parent of three children, she understands about earaches and the worries of parents with sick children, and writes to entertain, educate and comfort both parent and child.

Ear Infections Made Easy: Answers to Common Questions

A Guide for Parents

Slipped into the back cover of this book, Dr. Cowan's questions and answers about ear infections reflect years of pediatric experience. Her recommendations are consistent with the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Acute Otitis Media" released by the AAP/AAFP in March 2004. The Guide offers clear suggestions about what to do and when to call for help with a sick child.

A Trunkful of Tips

A Trunkful of Tips is a facilitator's guide to accompany The Little Elephant with the Big Earache. Written for health professionals, teachers or day care providers, A Trunkful of Tips is a paperback, annotated version of the story into which teaching "tips" have been inserted. An example of a typical teaching point is: "Ear infections are not contagious but children with ear infections feel tired and sick and should be allowed to play quietly and to rest. A good rule of thumb is to let them stay at home until they have been fever free for 24 hours."
